South African gambling regulators. Last updated 2026-07-26.
Every licensed bookmaker in South Africa answers to one of nine provincial gambling boards and, at national level, the National Gambling Board. This page tells you which body regulates which operator, how to verify a licence, and where to complain if something goes wrong.
Provincial gambling boards

How to verify a bookmaker licence
- Find the licence number in the operator's website footer.
- Identify the issuing board (usually named alongside the number).
- Open the board's licensee register (linked on the relevant page above).
- Search for the operator name or licence number.
- Confirm the licence status is 'Active' and the licence has not expired.
Use our licence verifier for a one-click check across all nine provincial registers.
Complaint routes
Where you complain depends on the operator's province of licence.
- Payment or account dispute. Complain to the operator first. If unresolved after 14 days, escalate to the provincial board of licence.
- Advertising or promotion breach. Complain to the Advertising Regulatory Board and, in parallel, to the provincial board of licence.
- Problem gambling and self-exclusion. See our responsible gambling guide or call the National Responsible Gambling Programme helpline on 0800 006 008.
- Suspected unlicensed operator. Report to the National Gambling Board via the NGB verified-operators portal.
