Pirates got here the hard way. They needed extra time to see off Durban City 2-1 in the quarter-finals, then dismantled Sekhukhune United 4-0 on aggregate over two legs in the semis. Sundowns had it tougher than the seedings suggested. Polokwane City took them to extra time in the quarters (3-2), and Golden Arrows drew them 3-3 across two legs in the semis. Downs went through on away goals. That kind of route hardens a team.
The venue is still officially TBC. September reporting has Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban as the favourite host. We're not calling it until the PSL calls it.
State of Play
Sundowns hold the psychological edge on paper. They've won the last three PSL titles, they're deeper on paper, and Miguel Cardoso has the squad playing patient, controlled possession football. Pirates have the recent trophy though. They won this competition in 2025 (beat Stellenbosch 2-1 in Mbombela) and go into the final as defending MTN8 champions.
The tactical question is straightforward. Sundowns want a slow, structured game where their midfield can dictate. Pirates want it fast, direct, and turnover-heavy through Tshegofatso Mabasa and Relebohile Mofokeng. Whichever team imposes its tempo in the first 25 minutes tends to win these.
