The penalty save mattered before the second goal
A 2-0 scoreline can suggest a game was comfortable throughout. This one still stood at 1-0 when Pirates had their penalty, and it stayed that way until stoppage time.
Mokoena gave Sundowns the early advantage, but Williams protected it at the moment Pirates could have drawn level. Rayners' late goal then removed the remaining doubt.
The league race has moved on
By 2 November, Sundowns lead the Premiership on 26 points from ten games. Pirates have 25 from nine after beating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the Soweto Derby.
The cup result is part of their season, not a reason to ignore the game in hand. Pirates can still move above Sundowns by winning that extra match.
