Dee leads a productive Dragons pack
Elliot Dee scored twice as Dragons put six tries past Scarlets at Rodney Parade. Props Rodrigo Martinez and Rob Hunt also crossed, giving the front row four of the home side's six tries.
Dee's first came from a driving lineout. Dragons also won a scrum penalty after bringing on Rhodri Jones and Dillon Lewis, so the forward contribution continued beyond the starting front row.
That is the part of the performance we want to follow against Ospreys. Dragons have just shown they can turn close-range possession into points through several different forwards, not only one prolific finisher.
They trailed 14-12 at half-time before scoring 26 points in the second half. Combined with the opening 19-19 draw at Benetton, it leaves them unbeaten after two rounds.
| Team | Round one | Round two |
|---|---|---|
| Dragons | Drew 19-19 at Benetton | Won 38-26 v Scarlets |
| Ospreys | Lost 24-41 at Sharks | Lost 19-35 at Lions |
Ospreys were hurt at the driving lineout
The Lions scored six tries in their 35-19 win over Ospreys at Ellis Park. Hooker PJ Botha and replacement Morne Brandon both scored from driving lineouts shortly after half-time.
Those scores changed a match Ospreys had led 12-10 at the break. Their pack couldn't prevent the Lions turning attacking lineouts into tries, which gives Dee and the Dragons forwards a clear area to attack.
Dan Edwards' yellow card for a high tackle made the afternoon harder. Kelly Mpeku scored twice as the Lions moved clear, before Ross Moriarty crossed with the final play.
The 16-point defeat also understated the number of scoring opportunities conceded. The Lions converted only one of their six tries; Ospreys can't rely on another opponent leaving that many points from the tee.
The visitors still carry a scoring threat
Ospreys scored three tries in Johannesburg through Keiran Williams, Efan Daniel and Moriarty. Daniel's came from their own driving lineout, so this isn't a forward contest in which only one side has a route to the line.
They also scored 24 points against the Sharks in round one. The defensive return is the problem, with 41 conceded in Durban followed by another 35 at Ellis Park.
Dragons haven't shut opponents out either. Scarlets scored four tries at Rodney Parade, including one from Ioan Jones while his side were down to 14 men.
That is the strongest reason not to chase a large Dragons winning margin. Ospreys have enough scoring form to keep pressure on a defence that allowed Scarlets back into the game.
Recent derbies favour a narrower bet
Ospreys won the January meeting 19-13, while last October's match at Rodney Parade finished 19-19. Dragons haven't won either of the two most recent meetings, despite their better start to this season.
The 57-24 Ospreys win in April 2025 is another reminder that the visiting side have caused this opponent problems. Friday's bet rests on the current packs and opening-round performances, not a supposed Dragons stranglehold on the fixture.
We prefer the straight home win to giving away points. Ospreys return from two South African defeats, while Dragons remain at Rodney Parade after beating Scarlets.
Betway's @1.69 home-win price reflects that stronger start. Compare it with the current Dragons match-result prices across South African betting sites, rather than the shorter double-chance selection.
Verdict
Back Dragons to win @1.69 at Betway for one unit. Their productive front row is a good match for the lineout problems Ospreys showed in Johannesburg, even with the visitors' recent derby record against us.
