The Badgers have won in two different ways

Garden Route made 182/4 against Eastern Cape Iinyathi at this ground on Thursday, then held the visitors to 143/9. Monday brought a different task in Polokwane, where the Badgers restricted the Impalas to 128/6 and reached 131/5 with three balls remaining.

The second chase was tight for such a modest target. It still followed a strong bowling effort and gives the hosts another win before they return to Oudtshoorn for Wednesday's 13:00 SAST start.

Thursday's performance offers the clearest reason to take them seriously against a shorter-priced side. All six bowlers took a wicket, so the win didn't depend on one spell doing the work for the whole attack.

Badgers bowlerFigures v Eastern CapeOvers
Banele Cele2/234
Enathi Khitshini2/123
Leo Sadler2/304

A bowling spread that can trouble the Lions

Banele Cele's four overs cost 23 and brought two wickets. Enathi Khitshini took 2/12 from three, while Leo Sadler completed his four-over allocation with 2/30.

Together, those three delivered 11 overs for 65 runs and six wickets. That spread gives Garden Route a better argument than a home-ground hunch: several members of the attack contributed while Eastern Cape were chasing a substantial total.

The Lions present a stronger batting challenge than the Impalas. Garden Route will need another performance closer to Thursday's collective effort, especially through the overs in which the visiting middle order accelerates.

The Lions have the batting to punish loose overs

Mitchell van Buuren made 66 and Rassie van der Dussen 46 against North West Dragons on Friday. Delano Potgieter then struck an unbeaten 39 from 15 balls to lift the Lions to 205/5.

Those are the main threats to the underdog bet. A Lions innings containing both a substantial top-order score and another Potgieter finish would demand far more from the Badgers than Monday's chase of 129.

The concern for the visitors is what happened after making 205. Wihan Lubbe hit 55 from 27 balls, Diego Rosier 45 from 25 and Dian Forrester an unbeaten 51 from 28 as the Dragons finished the chase in 19.2 overs.

The Lions' next match, against the Warriors on Sunday, was abandoned without a ball bowled. They therefore travel to Oudtshoorn without a completed game since that expensive night at the Wanderers.

Garden Route need enough from their top order

Yaseen Valli made 62 from 42 balls against Eastern Cape before retiring hurt. Slade van Staden stayed unbeaten on 52 from 33, while Janneman Malan contributed 29 at the top.

Van Staden's innings is important to this matchup because Garden Route need someone to bat beyond the opening partnership. Their Monday chase went into the last over despite requiring only 129, a much lower target than the Lions' 205 on Friday.

The @3.50 price at Betway gives us room to back a bowling-led upset for half a unit. The Lions are @1.30 in the same match-winner market; our SA betting sites guide covers the operators used for these cricket selections.

Verdict

Garden Route Badgers @3.50 at Betway is our half-unit pick. Their recent bowling contributions and two wins make them worth backing at that price, with Van Buuren, Van der Dussen and Potgieter the reasons to keep the stake small.
