Rugby betting in SA spans Test rugby (Springboks), URC, Currie Cup, and Champions Cup. Each format has small but important rule differences for settlement.
Match Result (Win / Draw / Win)
Settles on the score at the end of regulation time (80 minutes including referee time). In knockout fixtures with extra time, the 80-minute market settles at 80 minutes only - extra time has separate markets.
Draw
If teams are level at 80 minutes, the draw wins. In knockout play, the match continues to extra time, but the 80-minute "match result" market still settles as a draw.
Handicap (Spread)
Common rugby handicaps: -3.5, -7.5, -12.5, -17.5. The favourite must win by more than the handicap.
Example: Springboks -7.5 vs All Blacks. Boks must win by 8+ points for the bet to win. If they win by exactly 7, the bet loses.
Total Points (Over/Under)
Total points scored by both teams in 80 minutes. Common lines: 40.5, 45.5, 50.5. Try-fest matches with multiple bonus tries push totals over 60+.
Try Scorer Markets
First try scorer
Pays if your selected player scores the FIRST try of the match. Penalty tries do NOT count for player markets - settled as "no first try scorer" or "tie/no bet" depending on operator.
Anytime try scorer
Pays if your player scores at any point in 80 minutes. Penalty tries do not count.
Last try scorer
Pays if your player scores the LAST try. Settles when the final whistle blows.
Bonus Point Markets
"Will Team X earn a bonus point?" - settles YES if the team scores 4+ tries OR loses by 7 points or fewer. URC, Currie Cup, and Champions Cup all use bonus point systems but the "4 tries OR loss within 7" rule is universal across SA-licensed operators.
Both Teams to Score Try
Pays Yes if both teams score at least one try in 80 minutes. Penalty tries DO count for this market (in contrast to player try scorer markets).
Half-Time / Full-Time
Predicts both the half-time and full-time outcomes. 9 possible combinations: HT-FT result combinations. Pays high odds.
Player Performance
Player to score X+ points
Includes tries (5pts), conversions (2pts), penalties (3pts), and drop goals (3pts). Settles on actual points scored.
Player carries / tackles
Settles on the official match stats provided by Opta or the rugby data feed used by the bookmaker. Different sources can produce different counts - operator decision is final.
Test Rugby Specific Rules
Series winners
For tour series (e.g. Springboks vs All Blacks 4-Test 2026), the series winner is the team that wins more Tests. If the series is drawn 2-2, most operators offer a "drawn series" market.
Bonus point series
Some Test series use bonus points to determine the series winner. If a 2-1 series result with bonus points sees one team finishing ahead on points, the series winner is the team with more series points - check operator T&Cs because settlement varies.
Live Betting Rules
Rugby live betting suspends after every try, conversion, penalty, yellow card, and red card. Cash out values shift dramatically on tries, especially in close matches.
Common Disputes
TMO decisions
If the TMO overturns an on-field decision, bets settle based on the FINAL official decision. Operators do not retroactively change settlement based on later replays.
Match abandoned
If a match is abandoned in the second half with substantial play completed, most operators settle on the score at abandonment. If abandoned earlier, bets void.
