South Africa's Junior Springboks open the defence of their World Rugby Junior World Championship title against Uruguay in Tbilisi on Saturday, and we see absolutely no reason to oppose Kevin Foote's side here. The Junior Boks arrive in Georgia as the world's best U20 outfit: reigning world champions, 2026 U20 Rugby Championship winners, and unbeaten across all age-group competitions this year. Uruguay are back at the Junior World Championship for the first time since 2009 and face a mountain to climb in their very first game. Back SA to win with a big handicap and back them to put serious points on the board.

The Form Line

The Junior Springboks come into this tournament in the form of their lives. They went through the 2026 U20 Rugby Championship entirely unbeaten, hammering Argentina 48-21 in Round 1 and dismantling Australia 56-17 in Round 2, before a 29-29 draw in the decider with New Zealand was enough to clinch the title on points. They are also the reigning world champions, having beaten New Zealand 23-15 in Rovigo last July to end a 13-year drought at the top of the global U20 game. Under coach Kevin Foote, this squad has the experience of knowing what it takes to win on the biggest stages.

Uruguay return to the Junior World Championship for the first time since 2009, when they finished 16th in Japan. They earned their way back through the U20 Trophy, finishing runners-up in 2023 and fourth in 2024, which speaks to gradual but real improvement in their programme. Captain Ignacio Merli leads a squad that will be eager to make an impression, and player to watch Justo Ferrario has the ability to cause problems in the right conditions. That said, the step up from the Trophy to a first-choice Pool A at the JWC is enormous.

The two sides have not met at a Junior World Championship before. Their only confirmed meeting at U20 level was in the 2021 U20 International Series, where the Junior Boks posted a 29-10 win on home soil, a game in which SA led 7-3 at the break before pulling away with four more tries in the second half. The result flattered Uruguay somewhat given they were competitive for long periods, but the gulf in class was eventually telling.

SA coach Kevin Foote has named a 30-man squad with seven players who featured in last year's title-winning campaign in Italy, providing a spine of experience. Captain Siphosethu Mnebelele leads the group, and Markus Muller is the one the selectors and analysts have flagged as the player most likely to light up the tournament. Specific starting XV selections for this opening match are TBC. For Uruguay, Ignacio Merli captains a squad that includes the lively Justo Ferrario, who World Rugby have highlighted as their dangerman. Injury information for both sides is unavailable at this stage.

Verdict

This is as one-sided a Pool A opener as you will find in the draw. South Africa are the world's best U20 team right now, arriving off the back of an unbeaten domestic season and with a squad packed full of players who know how to finish a game. Uruguay deserve credit for earning their way back to the top table, but this is not the right match for an upset.
