Rugby betting in South Africa, what we actually back

SA has one of the most active rugby betting markets in the world, and we punt it more than we should. From a Boks Test at Loftus to a Currie Cup Friday-night fixture nobody else is watching, there's always a market available. We've narrowed our rugby betting down to a few things that actually work, and a longer list of things that look smart on paper but quietly drain the bankroll.

Key Rugby Betting Markets

  • Match Winner - Back the team to win outright
  • Handicap - The bookmaker gives one team a points head start
  • Total Points Over/Under - Bet on whether the combined score goes over or under a set number
  • First Try Scorer - Popular in Test matches at juicy odds
  • Winning Margin - Predict the margin of victory within a range

Backing the Boks

The Boks draw the biggest rugby volumes on SA bookmaker sites, especially Loftus and Ellis Park Tests. We avoid the moneyline on home Tests because the price is usually 1.20 or shorter against tier-two opposition, where the value sits is the handicap. The Boks have covered minus 20 in seven of their last ten home Tests against non-Six Nations sides, so the handicap line is normally where we go. Rugby Championship away matches are different, the Boks lose value on the road and the totals market is the better play.

URC and Currie Cup, the punter's view

URC is our favourite rugby betting market. SA franchises at altitude in Pretoria or Johannesburg, against Irish or Welsh sides flying in cold, is one of the cleanest handicap angles in world rugby. We back the home team minus 7 or minus 9 most weeks at the Bulls and Lions, and it lands more often than it should. Currie Cup is harder because rotation is heavy, so we stick to the bigger fixtures and avoid the four-leg accas tempting us at payday-Friday closing prices.

Where we open the app for rugby

YesPlay, Easybet South Africa, and Zarbet have the deepest rugby markets among SA bookmakers. We rate the player prop markets above the team props for big Tests, particularly first try scorer and player to score two-plus tries. The catch is that the props markets close earlier and offer thinner stake limits, so plan your bets ahead of kick-off.
