Horse racing has the most nuanced settlement rules of any SA betting market. From non-runners to dead heats to early payouts, here are the rules that decide whether your ticket wins or pushes.
Win Bet
Settles on the horse that finishes 1st as declared by the official judge. The "weighed in" official confirmation is when bets are settled - not when horses cross the line.
Place Bet
Pays if your horse finishes in the place positions. Place positions depend on field size:
- 4 runners or fewer: 1st only (win-only races)
- 5-7 runners: 1st, 2nd
- 8-15 runners: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
- 16+ runners: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th (in handicap races only)
Each-Way (E/W)
Two bets in one. Half stake on win, half stake on place. Place portion pays at fractional odds (typically 1/4 or 1/5 of win odds).
- 1/4 odds: place pays at 25% of win odds. Example: horse wins at 12.00 (11/1), each-way places pays at (12-1)/4 + 1 = 3.75
- 1/5 odds: place pays at 20% of win odds. Used for handicaps with 16+ runners.
If your horse wins, both portions pay. If it places only, only the place portion pays.
Non-Runners (NR)
If your horse is declared a non-runner before the race starts:
- Single bets: stake refunded
- Multi bets / accumulators: the leg becomes a "1.00" (i.e. void), so the multi continues with remaining legs
Dead Heat Rules
If two or more horses finish equal at the line:
- Win bets: stake split between dead-heat horses
- Place bets: same - stake divided
- Each-way: win and place portions both subject to dead-heat rules
The exact split depends on the number of horses dead-heating. Two horses dead-heating means each gets half stake at full odds. Three horses means each gets one-third.
Rule 4 Deductions (Withdrawn Horse)
If a horse is withdrawn after the market opens, all bets remain valid but at reduced returns to reflect the changed odds. The deduction depends on the withdrawn horse's starting price.
Disqualification
If the official judge disqualifies the winner after the race (rare, but happens), the next-placed horse becomes the winner for settlement. Bets settle on the official result, not the order at the finish line.
Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG)
If you place an early-price bet and the SP (starting price) is higher than the early price you took, BOG operators pay at the higher SP. Most major SA operators offer BOG on selected races and meetings - check their racing page for current eligibility.
Tote vs Fixed Odds
SA racing has both tote (parimutuel) and fixed-odds betting:
- Tote: returns based on the pool. Final dividend depends on how others bet. Set price not known until after the race.
- Fixed odds: price locked in when you place the bet. SA bookmakers offer fixed odds on most races.
Forecast / Tricast / Trifecta
Straight Forecast
Pick 1st and 2nd in correct order.
Reverse Forecast (or Combination Forecast)
Pick 1st and 2nd in either order. Counts as two bets, doubling stake.
Tricast / Trifecta
Pick 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in correct order.
Quadrella / Pick 4 / Jackpot
Pick the winner of four (or more) consecutive races. Pool-based with substantial returns when nobody else has the same set of selections.
Photo Finish
If the result requires a photo finish, bets settle when the photo is decided by the official judge. The judge's decision is final - operators settle on the official photo finish result, not amateur photo analysis.
Live Betting in Racing
Most SA racing operators offer in-running odds during the race itself. Cash out is available pre-race up until the off, but rarely during the race itself due to the speed of position changes.
