Bafana Bafana Squad and Predicted Lineup vs Mexico - World Cup 2026
By Sipho Nkosi · Published 10 June 2026 · Updated 10 June 2026
- Hugo Broos has cut his squad to the final 26 men for the World Cup. 16 of the 26 play in South Africa or have come through PSL clubs; 10 are based overseas.
- Predicted starting XI for the opener against Mexico: a 4-2-3-1 with Williams in goal, Foster as the lone striker, and Zwane as the creator behind him.
- Notable omission: Percy Tau. The Al-Ahly forward was widely tipped but did not make the final cut.
- Three goalkeepers, ten defenders, five midfielders, eight forwards. Average squad age sits in the mid-twenties - the youngest Bafana World Cup squad since 2002.
Hugo Broos named his final 26-man Bafana Bafana squad on 22 May, and the side travels to Mexico City this week ahead of the World Cup 2026 opener against the co-hosts at Estadio Azteca on Thursday 11 June (21:00 SAST). The squad blends the settled PSL spine that came through CAF qualifying with a handful of overseas-based players who add depth. Below is the full 26-man list by position, followed by our predicted starting XI for the opener.

Three goalkeepers, ten defenders, five midfielders, eight forwards. 16 of the 26 are PSL-based or come through PSL clubs; 10 play their club football overseas - across England, the United States, Norway, Germany, Portugal and Cyprus.

Predicted Starting XI - 4-2-3-1
Broos has rotated through different shapes across qualifying and the May friendlies but the 4-2-3-1 has been the recurring base. The double pivot of Mokoena and Adams covers Bafana defensively against quality opposition; Zwane operates as the link between midfield and the front three. Foster is the lone striker - the only natural number nine with regular minutes at the top European level. The wide pair of Sebelebele and Appollis carry the pace and one-versus-one threat.

What the Lineup Tells Us
Three things stand out about the predicted XI. First, the back four is the youngest position group - Mbokazi and Makhanya are 22 and 23, Kabini is 22. This is a defence that has been built over the past 18 months and now faces its sternest test. Second, Zwane at 36 is the senior playmaker - his ability to find pockets between the lines is the reason Broos has trusted him over the younger creative options. Third, the front three of Sebelebele, Foster and Appollis is the most direct attacking trio in the squad. There is no false-nine option, no second striker - Broos wants width and pace to stretch the Mexican back four at altitude.
Williams remains the captain and first-choice keeper. The defensive spine of Mudau, Makhanya, Mbokazi and Kabini is the same one that came through qualifying. Mokoena anchors the midfield as he has done all cycle. The variations Broos can make against different opposition come in the front three and in the role of the number ten.
Notable Omissions
Percy Tau is the headline absentee. The Al-Ahly forward had been a regular under Broos through earlier qualifying rounds but did not make the final cut. The selection reflects the depth in the attacking positions - Mofokeng, Maseko and Rayners all offer different profiles in the wide and central forward roles.
Sphephelo Sithole moves to Portugal's CD Tondela has added a new option to the midfield - his ball-carrying through the lines is the one quality the predicted XI lacks. Expect him to come on around the hour mark if Bafana need to change the rhythm.
